I'm so excited that I'm struggling to write this post
Guess who's been approved for a Gender Recognition Certificate (#GRC) & will finally be able to update her birth certificate & marriage licence?
This gal
Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!
#trans #transgender #TransWoman #TransFem #transition #queer #LGBTQ+ #LGBTQIA+ #GRP
Don't worry: I've redacted my full details from the screenshots
For context, particularly for folks outside the UK who may not know the process, the process of changing your gender legally is slow, dehumanising & medicalised.
If you want to read about it in full, take a look here:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-gender-recognition-certificate
In short though, it typically requires:
* a UK medical diagnosis of being trans (gender dysphoria or incongruence) by someone on their approved list
* 2 years of evidence of living in your gender
* you to be >= 18
It's such gatekeeping bullshit.
Even with the diagnosis requirement, they also need another professional to refer to it (e.g., endocrinologist; GP etc.)
It's worth noting too that your only options are man or woman: there's zero legal recognition for non-binary folks at present.
If you're seeking to get a GRC yourself, please note that changing your name is typically seen as starting your social transition.
Additionally, you'll need 2 years' worth of evidence, so keep everything with your new name on it to hand.
@SleepyCatten woop, congrats!
